Skoda Celebrates 50th Anniversary of its First Rear-Engined Car, the 1000 MB

For those of you who grew up in communist countries like I did, the Skoda 1000 MB is a familiar car. Now, at its 50th anniversary, the compact model is one of Skoda’s most iconic models, as it was the brand’s first vehicle that combined a rear-mounted engine with rear-wheel-drive, independent suspension and unibody construction.

VW Opens its 16th Plant in China and 105th Worldwide for VW and Skoda Models

Another month, another plant inauguration for VW in China. One can't help but marvel at the scale of the world's third-biggest carmaker. The Volkswagen Group has just opened its 105th plant worldwide and the 16th it has in China, the world’s largest car market.

Located in Ningbo, south eastern China, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles and will create 5,700 new jobs. The plant features production technology based on the Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) and will manufacturer Volkswagen and Skoda models.

The new plant was built in less than two years and is part of the Shanghai-Volkswagen joint venture between SAIC Motor Corporation and Volkswagen AG. Located 150 km south of the greater Shanghai area, the facility has its own press, body and paint shops plus a final assembly unit. The first model to roll off the assembly line will be the Skoda Superb, with other MQB-based VW and Skoda models to follow in the next stage.

“This new, state-of-the-art factory is further proof of the Volkswagen Group's comprehensive commitment in China. For our Group brands, the Ningbo plant also gives new momentum to tapping the full potential of the huge market south and west of Shanghai,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group.

China is the VW Group’s largest sales market, with the German carmaker delivering 2.81 million vehicles in the country last year together with its partners Shanghai-Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen. Deliveries rose 18 percent in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period last year to 2.36 million vehicles. By 2018, the automaker targets an annual production capacity of around 4 million vehicles.

Review on What Makes Skoda's Rapid Spaceback Tick

Skoda now has two Rapid variants for prospective buyers to choose from. You’d be forgiven for not knowing which to buy, as both are actually hatchbacks, but one looks like a sedan and gives you more boot space for carrying bags, while the other has less of it, plus a premium edge, if you go for the panoramic roof model that has glass extend down the tailgate for a surprisingly posh overall effect.

UK magazine AutoExpress recently reviewed the latter and did not have a hard time justifying both models, in the end. The Spaceback is pushed forth as a more youthful choice, and it will be an especially important model in the UK, where small sedans are shunned in favor of hatches (and more recently crossovers).

The rest of the package is standard Rapid, with its good and bad points, and even the mechanical tweaks it benefits from don’t really make it any different to the regular model, according to the review. Check it out after the virtual jump.

VW Group Tops 7 Million Sales in Nine Months for the First Time Ever

Even though the European market continues to have problems, the VW Group had…no problem setting an all-time sales record surpassing the 7 million mark for the first time during the first three quarters of a year (from January through September).

"Thanks to a broad-based, international positioning and a convincing product range we were able to respond well to the continuing uncertainty in the Eurozone and the challenging overall market situation – and have thus been able to win many customers for our attractive models,” commented Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler.

While the group's sales were down 2.4 percent in Europe (2.73 million deliveries) and 9.4 percent in South America (681,200), it reported a 9.2 percent increase in North America (664,500 sales) and 16 percent in the Asia-Pacific region (2.63 million). In China alone, the VW Group sold 2.35 million cars in the first nine months of 2013, an increase of 17.7 percent over the same period last year.

By brand, Volkswagen recorded a 3.6 percent increase in global sales (4.36 million), with Audi up 7.6 percent (1.18 million deliveries), Porsche sold 119,700 cars (it became a member of the VW family in August 2012), Skoda dropped 4.5 percent (684,900) and Seat increased its sales by 11.7 percent (266,100 cars).

The group's commercial vehicles division handed over 406,600 models to customers around the world, 0.7 percent less than last year.

On Monday, Skoda initiated series production of its brand new, third generation Octavia saloon at its Czech car plant in Mladá Boleslav, ahead of its European market launch that will take place at the end of January 2013.
Skoda said that in order to prepare its factory for the MQB-platform based model, it introduced "one of the most comprehensive modernization and expansion projects" in the history of its main plant at Mladá Boleslav, boosting the Octavia/Rapid production line’s capacity from 800 to 1,200 cars per day.

Scoop: New 2013 Skoda Octavia RS with VW Golf GTI Heart Makes an Early Appearance

While Skoda told us that we should expect to see the high-performance RS (or vRS in the United Kingdom) version of the newly introduced 2013 Octavia sometime next year, the automaker itself seems to have uploaded the car on its official configurator by mistake (?).
The images from Skoda's site are a tad fuzzy, but they still allow us to see what the new Octavia RS will look like on the outside.

New Skoda Octavia III Live Photos and Videos from Czech Presentation

As its most important new model of the past few years, Skoda wants to give the third generation of the Octavia as much publicity as possible, which is why the Czech carmaker planned a special event for the press at its headquarters in Mlada Boleslav earlier this week ahead of the car's first public outing at the Geneva Salon in March.
Skoda's bestseller has been designed from the ground up sharing its MQB-platform and mechanical hardware with the latest generations of the VW Golf, Seat Leon and Audi A3 compacts, all of which were released in Europe this year.

Skoda Officially Reveals All-New and Sleeker Looking 2013 Octavia III [Updated]

It’s been a long road with plenty of scoops of both camouflaged prototypes and unmarked cars captured during testing and photo shoots, but now the time has come for Skoda to release its third generation of the successful Octavia series, which is seen here in liftback form with an estate model to follow next year.
The 2013 Octavia is the first Skoda model to make use of the VW Group's new and lighter MQB platform that underpins several other compact cars, most notably the VW Golf Mk7 and the latest Audi A3 hatchbacks.
Compared to the model it replaces, the new Octavia is 90mm longer at 4,659mm, 45mm wider at 1,814mm, and more importantly, the wheelbase has been stretched by 108mm to 2,686mm, something that mainly benefits the interior and space on the rear seats.
2013-Skoda-Octavia-III-4As a result, front head room has increased by 8 mm, front elbow width by 39 mm and rear elbow width by 26 mm over the outgoing Octavia. According to Skoda, the Octavia offers a class-leading interior space in the compact segment with 1,782 mm of interior length and the largest boot with a volume of 590 liters.

Skoda Drops New Images of 2013 Octavia III Including First of the Interior

If what the rumor mill is saying is true, then we're literally counting days until the online unveiling of the next generation of Skoda's most popular model, the 2013 Octavia Mk3, which could explain the number of teaser images being released by the Czech carmaker.
A couple of days after Skoda provided us a set with photos of the rear combination lights and the rear window and C-column treatment, the VW Group-owned company published three more images on Friday.

Skoda Teases Bits and Pieces of New Octavia 3 on Facebook While Readers Capture the Car Undressed

It doesn't make much sense for Skoda to play games with the new Octavia 3 anymore since both the sedan/liftback and estate versions of the car have been photographed multiple times on the road camouflage-free, yet the Czech carmaker insists on providing cropped pictures of the D-segment model.
The latest set featured on Skoda's Facebook page includes shots of the tail lamps and the rear window and C-column treatment.

Czech carmaker Skoda is wrapping up the development of its highly important Octavia III, as a prototype of the compact model was recorded on the road virtually camouflage-free, with the only parts of the car covered being the rear window corner and the a section of the headlamps.
While not straying too far away from the current model's shape, the third generation Octavia adopts Skoda's smoother design language with a lower and more sharply styled front end.
