Four Way Stop Sign Vs. Roundabout: Which Is More Efficient?

Written By Unknown on Thursday, October 17, 2013 | 3:00 PM

Europe and North America have different ways to move traffic through intersections. While on the Old Continent, the roundabout is king, in the New World, the four way stop sign is the most common way of dealing with traffic in regular intersections.

But which system is better? While the four way stop sign’s basic rule is that all cars have to stop at the sign and proceed in the same order of their arrival, the roundabout’s main rule is that one enters it without stopping if no car comes from the left (or from the right in the UK).

Both seem simple, but which one allows traffic to be more fluent? There a myth saying the roundabout is better, so the crew from the “Mythbusters” TV show decided to test it.

They set up both types of intersections and counted how many cars passed through each one during 15 minutes. Scroll down to find out whether the myth was confirmed or busted.
